This is not about the Mahatma’s dry state (Gujarat) where the liquor is widely smuggled and consumed in spite of the prohibitions and the state is the only loser as it does not get a single pie as revenue which may be used for health, education and for the infrastructural developments.
Gujarat shares its borders with many states and there is also a tiny little area called Daman (we are talking about) sandwiched between Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Arabian Sea. Daman is blessed with a rich and varied historical heritage and is an ideal place for tourists because of its people, affable climate, casuarinas wind breaks, tranquil seashores, heavenly beaches and moreover thanks to the excise policies of the state for easy and affordable availability of liquor as a bonus to make it a tourist heaven.
But the dry status of the neighboring state attracts the people of the surrounding areas to Daman at the weekends, who visit the place for fun, drinking at beaches and creating nuisance at the places. During the last visit I observed the people start coming early mornings and start their days with Whiskeys, Wine and beer. The similar situation remains at the seashores and beaches where everybody (including the women entrepreneurs of the commodities) is after you to provide the same.
It is the growth of the tourism, employment generation and the revenue for the state on the cost of the loss to the neighboring state or the retardation of the values and the rich heritage there on the beaches, the religious places, the invigorating combine silver talcum sands, stretches of lazy palms and the ancient monuments???
